Gingerbread Cookies & Film

This past week I finally got around to developing some film that I had shot back around Christmas, yea that’s right I said develop. I’ve been getting back into film lately and have found why I loved it when I was in College. Film is so mysterious, you never really know for sure how things will come out until you get the images back, and it’s slow. So slow that as soon as you send a roll off to be developed all you can think about every waking hour is if they turned out how you saw them in you minds eye. The anticipation just kills you, 2 weeks is much to long to wait for film! I still love it though, because I feel like it makes me slow down and think about every detail in the frame before I press that shutter because if I don’t I’ve just wasted money. It’s almost like it pushes me to be better before each exposure. I’ve shot about 4 more rolls since this I can’t wait to get back more rolls (currently bitting my nails as we speak) but I hope to do a lot more personal work with film!

This is my new addition to our camera bag, it’s a medium format camera and man is it lovely, lens has bokeh goodness that we all hope for when we purchase our 50mm 1.2′s or  85mm 1.2′s, and it’s different. Different in the way that when I look through the viewfinder prism it’s like I’m looking at things differently, the same feeling when I use my Hasselblad 500c, like I’m looking at things through new eyes or a different perspective. I can’t wait to get started on some personal projects with this thing it should be a lot of fun!

New eyes and an awesome perspective for sure. Can’t wait to see your personal work!

That’s no “simulated” grain, to be sure. Mmmmm…. the mingling scents of gingerbread and fixer!

David Abel - January 19, 2012 - 3:11 AM

Thanks Kia, I’m currently waiting on four rolls of film, such torture!

David Abel - January 19, 2012 - 3:13 AM

Definitely real grain, so much more noticeable on 35mm format than on 120 format, love the look of it though!

My new video

I’ve been holding this one back for a while now, it’s a video that we started in april 2011! And was finished not too long ago, I’ve just been holding off until some of the other changes that we’ve been making get close to being finished, and I’m excited to say that they are! Soon we’ll be able to show you all a new site, logo, office, and packaging! I can’t wait! This is just one of the few things that we’ve been working on, but I hope it wets your pallet! Have a look!

Thunder or Lightening?

Photograph by Angela Stott Photography

Each time I speak to a client I always ask them when they knew they were the ones for each other, and the answers always vary, but what I’ve found is that they always fall into one of two categories. Lightening or Thunder. The ones who’s love is like Lightening, is love that begins with a sudden and instantaneous flash of blinding light that is so beautiful that you never want to look away. For the ones who’s love is it is like slow moving thunder intensifies with each moment as it draws closer until it’s presence can no longer be ignored and seems to shake your world to it’s core. Each couples story is always unique but I’ve found that it all boils down to thunder or lightening. For me it was lightening, I can remember the exact moment that I knew I was going to mary my wife. We were at a wedding believe it or not, and she was a bridesmaid, there was a moment during the ceremony when the bride and groom did something funny and she turned to me and scrunched up her nose and laughed. As she finished laughing we looked at each other and kept smiling. It was in that moment that I knew that she was the one for me, and that my life would change forever.

Which one are you? Leave your story in the comments below!
